How to split travel expenses with friends

Add up everything the group spent, divide it by the number of people to get each person’s fair share, then compare that with what each person actually paid. Anyone who paid less than their share sends the difference; anyone who paid more receives it. When several people paid for different things, adding up each person’s balance first gets the whole trip settled in a few transfers instead of one for every expense.

A worked example: four friends, one weekend

Mia, Noah, Liam and Zoe take a weekend trip. Mia books the rental house, Noah pays for the car and gas, Liam pays for a group dinner, and Zoe happens not to pay for anything.

Who paidForAmount
MiaRental house$600
NoahCar and gas$240
LiamGroup dinner$160
ZoeNothing$0
Total$1,000

Each person’s fair share is $1,000 ÷ 4 = $250. Now compare what each person paid with their share:

PersonPaidShareBalance
Mia$600$250+$350 (is owed)
Noah$240$250−$10 (owes)
Liam$160$250−$90 (owes)
Zoe$0$250−$250 (owes)

Balances add up to zero: 350 − 10 − 90 − 250 = 0.

Settling every expense separately means nine small IOUs. Combined, it is three transfers, all to Mia: Zoe sends $250, Liam sends $90, Noah sends $10. Everyone is settled up, and Noah and Liam never have to pay each other at all.

When the split is not equal

How to do it, step by step

  1. Start one record for the whole tripMake it before you leave. A shared book on your phone is better than a note, because everyone can add what they paid.
  2. Log each expense with who paidPut it in when it happens, with a few words (“gas”, “tickets”). Waiting until the end is how receipts get lost.
  3. Choose how each expense is dividedEqual for most things, shares or exact amounts when it is uneven. In MuCash that is Equal, Shares or Exact, and you can add friends by name without them installing anything.
  4. Let the app add it all upIt works out each person’s balance and suggests the fewest transfers that settle the group. You can also try your numbers in the free calculator without signing up.
  5. Pay back and mark it as paidPeople settle however they like, such as Venmo, Zelle, Cash App or cash. MuCash does not move money, so mark each transfer as paid once it is done.

Questions

How do you split a trip when one person paid for everything?

Divide the total by the number of people and ask everyone else to send that amount to the person who paid. If three friends owe $250 each to the one who put $1,000 on a card, there are exactly three transfers.

What if several people paid for different things?

Work out each balance before paying anyone: what each person paid minus their share. People with a positive balance are owed money and people with a negative balance owe it. Matching the largest creditor with the largest debtor settles the group in the fewest transfers.

What is the easiest app to split a trip?

Any shared-expense app works if everyone can log what they paid. MuCash is free, has no daily limit, and lets you add people by name so nobody has to sign up first. Compare it with other options in our list of free Splitwise alternatives.

Do I need to scan receipts?

No, but it saves typing. MuCash reads the amount, store and date from a photo, free. The photo is read on your phone first; it goes to our server only if you tap “Read it better”, only to be read, and is not kept. You can correct anything before saving.

Keep the tab in one place

MuCash is free, with no ads and no daily limit. The people you split with do not need the app.
