How to split bills with friends in India

Keep every shared expense in one place, work out each person’s balance, and then pay by UPI: whoever owes sends the amount through GPay, PhonePe or Paytm, the way they already do. A shared-expense app does the counting; UPI does the paying. MuCash keeps the count for free, with no ads, and never touches the money, so there is nothing to link to your bank.

A worked example: a four-person Goa trip in rupees

Aarav, Isha, Rohan and Meera go to Goa. Aarav pays for the hotel, Isha for the cabs, Rohan for dinners, and Meera for the scooter rental.

Who paidForAmount
AaravHotel₹14,000
IshaCabs₹3,600
RohanDinners₹5,200
MeeraScooter rental₹1,200
Total₹24,000

Each person’s share is ₹24,000 ÷ 4 = ₹6,000. Comparing that with what each paid:

PersonPaidBalance
Aarav₹14,000+₹8,000 (is owed)
Isha₹3,600−₹2,400 (owes)
Rohan₹5,200−₹800 (owes)
Meera₹1,200−₹4,800 (owes)

Balances add up to zero: 8,000 − 2,400 − 800 − 4,800 = 0.

Settling each expense separately would be twelve small payments. Combined, it is three UPI transfers, all to Aarav: Meera sends ₹4,800, Isha sends ₹2,400 and Rohan sends ₹800.

Flat and PG rent in India

For a three-person flat paying ₹36,000 a month, an equal split is ₹12,000 each. If the rooms differ, splitting by size (say 180, 120 and 100 sq ft) gives ₹16,200, ₹10,800 and ₹9,000. Electricity, Wi-Fi and the maid or cook are usually shared equally on top: a ₹2,400 electricity bill is ₹800 each. A recurring entry makes the rent show up every month without anyone retyping it.

How to do it with UPI, step by step

  1. Make one shared groupOne for the trip or the flat, so everything sits in one place instead of across WhatsApp messages.
  2. Add friends by nameIn MuCash they do not need the app or an account. Add them by name and start splitting.
  3. Log who paid and how it is splitEqual, by shares or exact amounts. A receipt can be scanned on the phone, and it reads Indian-style numbers such as 1,00,000.
  4. Read the fewest-transfers listThe app shows who should pay whom. A ready-made WhatsApp message with the amount filled in makes the reminder easy.
  5. Pay by UPI, then mark it paidUse GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or any UPI app you already have. MuCash does not integrate with UPI or move money; you simply mark each debt as paid.
