How it works
- Photograph the receiptTake a new photo or pick one from your gallery. Somebody else at the table can send you theirs and it works the same.
- The fields fill themselvesAmount, shop name and date come off the receipt. They land in editable boxes, not straight into your book.
- Check and saveCorrect anything the reading got wrong, then save. Nothing is written until you have seen it.
What it looks like on a real receipt
A restaurant slip with five items and a total of $86.40. MuCash reads the total, the restaurant name and the date, and separates the five lines. In a shared book you tap each person’s initials on the dish they had, and the bill splits per person instead of four ways down the middle.

Why this is free here
The reading happens on your phone — Apple’s Vision framework on iPhone, ML Kit on Android. Both ship with the operating system, work offline and cost nothing per scan. There is no server in the loop and no bill to pass on, which is why we can give away what Splitwise sells inside a $40-a-year tier. The photo is never uploaded.
Questions
It read the amount wrong. What now?
Everything lands in editable boxes before anything is saved, so correct it and carry on. Receipts are not a standard format and every till prints its own layout, so a misread happens. If one receipt fails repeatedly, send it to us from Settings and we will tune the reader for it.
Does it work on receipts in my language?
Yes. The reader handles Latin, Japanese, Chinese and Devanagari scripts, and understands both decimal conventions — 1.234,56 and 1,234.56 — plus the Indian lakh grouping.
Do you keep the photo?
No. It is read on the device and never uploaded. We do not store receipt images at all, which is also why the feature costs nothing to run.
